What does it really mean??? Verses: Colossians 3:1-10; Galatians 5:16-26

There is a saying that comes across the stage that sounds correct but is not scriptural.

It’s time to unveil it according to God’s word which tells us to try the spirit by the spirit.

Here is the saying:

Don’t be so heavenly minded that you are no earthly good.

We’ve all heard that said, but is it scriptural?

Let’s see…

Witness #1: Colossians 3:1-10

Since, then, you have been raised with Christ,

set your hearts on things above, where Christ is,

seated at the right hand of God.

Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things.

For you died,

and your life is now hidden with Christ

in God.

When Christ, who is your life, appears,

then you also will appear with him in glory.

Put to death, therefore,

whatever belongs to your earthly nature:

sexual immorality, impurity, lust, evil desires and greed, which is idolatry.

Because of these,

the wrath of God is coming.

You used to walk in these ways,

in the life you once lived.

But now you must also rid yourselves

of all such things as these:

anger, rage, malice, slander, and filthy language from your lips.

Do not lie to each other,

since you have taken off

your old self

with its practices

and have put on the new self,

which is being renewed

in knowledge

in the image of its Creator. – Colossians 3:1-10

So man says, don’t be so heavenly minded that you are no earthly good, but God’s Word says, “Since, then, you have been raised with Christ, set your hearts on things above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God.

We are told to, “Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things.

This is completely opposite of what man says across the stage.

We are told to set our minds on things above… Understand, heaven is above.  Heaven is where spirit lives.

… And not on earthly things which are fleshly things.

Think about it…

We are told to crucify the flesh.

We are also told to walk in the spirit.

Witness #2: Galatians 5:16-26

So I say, walk by the Spirit,

and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh.

For the flesh desires what is contrary to the Spirit, and the Spirit what is contrary to the flesh.

They are in conflict with each other, so that you are not to do whatever you want.

But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the law.

The acts of the flesh are obvious: sexual immorality, impurity and debauchery; idolatry and witchcraft; hatred, discord, jealousy, fits of rage, selfish ambition, dissensions, factions and envy; drunkenness, orgies, and the like.

I warn you, as I did before, that those who live like this will not inherit the kingdom of God.

But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control.

Against such things there is no law.

Those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires.

Since we live by the Spirit, let us keep in step with the Spirit.

Let us not become conceited, provoking and envying each other. – Galatians 5:16-26

Witness #3: Romans 8:12-17

Therefore, brothers and sisters,

we have an obligation—

but it is not to the flesh,

to live according to it.

For if you live according to the flesh, you will die;

but if by the Spirit

you put to death the misdeeds of the body, you will live.

For those who are led by

the Spirit of God

are the children of God.

The Spirit you received does not make you slaves,

so that you live in fear again;

rather, the Spirit you received brought about your adoption

to sonship.

And by him we cry,

“Abba, Father.”

The Spirit himself

testifies with our spirit

that we are God’s children.

Now if we are children,

then we are heirs —heirs of God and co-heirs with Christ,

if indeed we share in his sufferings in order that we may also share

in his glory. – Romans 8:12-17

Three separate witnesses, each proving that the statement “to not be so heavenly minded that you are no earthly good” is not supported by scripture.

Listen, the lesson is that just because it comes from a stage doesn’t mean it’s correct. We are told to test the spirit by the Spirit. (1 John 4:1-5)

We need to make sure we are doing that for our own protection and for no other reason but that we are not drawn away from Christ.

This is important because there are alot of deceptions that are in this world. Jesus warned us about this in Matthew 24 and throughout scripture. He warned us for our own protection therefore it will behoove us to pay attention.
