Rooted Before Fruit Appears

“Therefore, as you have received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk in Him, rooted and built up in Him and established in the faith, just as you were taught, abounding in thanksgiving.” — Colossians 2:6–7

“For I will look on you favorably and make you fruitful, multiply you and confirm My covenant with you.” — Leviticus 26:9

“A tree is known by its fruit.” — Matthew 12:33

Let’s Take a Moment to Think About This

There is something both beautiful and frustrating about roots.

They are necessary, but they are hidden. Quiet. Unseen.

Most of us naturally look for fruit first. We want visible evidence that something is growing. We want movement we can measure. We want proof that our prayers, our studying, our waiting, and our believing are producing something meaningful. Yet God often begins much deeper than what can immediately be seen.

Before fruit appears above the surface, roots are already spreading underneath it.

That realization settled into my spirit while reflecting on Colossians 2:6–7. The passage says, “As you have received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk in Him, rooted and built up in Him.” The order stood out to me.

First, we receive.
Then we walk.
Then comes rooting, building, establishing, and eventually fruitfulness.

It reminded me of everyday life. When someone stands in line for food, they receive it first. After receiving, they leave carrying what was given to them. In the same way, Jesus is the Bread from Heaven. We receive Him, and then we continue walking with what we received.

Sometimes we become discouraged because we do not yet see visible fruit in our lives. We want immediate transformation. We want immediate answers. We want immediate evidence that something is happening. Meanwhile, God is strengthening unseen roots.

Roots determine stability.

A storm can reveal whether roots were shallow or deep all along. Trees that appeared strong can suddenly collapse if what was beneath the surface was never established properly. Yet a deeply rooted tree may bend, shake, and endure harsh weather while still remaining firmly planted.

Faith often works this way.

Before faithfulness becomes visible in our actions, obedience, endurance, and consistency, faith must first take root deep within the heart. Fruit does not begin on the branches. Fruit begins in the hidden places.

This is why Jesus spoke so often using trees, vines, roots, branches, and fruit. Heaven understands growth differently than we do. We celebrate visible harvests, but God carefully watches the condition of the roots.

There are seasons when it may feel like nothing is happening in your life spiritually. You may feel buried beneath pressure, hidden beneath difficult circumstances, or surrounded by uncertainty. Yet buried does not mean abandoned. Seeds are buried before they bloom. Roots develop in hidden places before fruit appears publicly.

Even now, God may be establishing something deeper within you than you realize.

The Word you continue reading.
The prayers you continue whispering.
The quiet obedience nobody notices.
The decision to remain faithful when emotions fluctuate.
The choice to continue walking with Christ, even before you see visible results.

These are roots.

Leviticus 26:9 says God looks upon His people favorably and makes them fruitful. Fruitfulness is not self-produced. It flows from remaining connected to the right Root.

If the Root is good, the fruit will come in its season.

Sometimes the holiest thing we can do is stay planted long enough for God to finish growing what cannot yet be seen.

Consider This

  1. Are there areas in your life where God may be strengthening roots before revealing fruit?
  2. Have you been discouraged simply because growth has been happening beneath the surface instead of above it?
  3. What would it look like to remain rooted in Christ during seasons where fruit is not yet visible?

Before You Go, Hold Onto This Thought

Do not mistake hidden growth for absence.

God often does His deepest work beneath the surface before anyone can see the evidence of it. Stay rooted in Christ. Continue receiving His Word. Continue walking with Him. In time, what has been quietly established in the hidden places will begin to bear fruit in the open.

Roots come before fruit.

Stay planted.
