Let’s Start With the Word
“Rooted and built up in Him and established in the faith.” — Colossians 2:7
“A faithful man shall abound with blessings.” — Proverbs 28:20
“By their fruit you will recognize them.” — Matthew 7:20
Let’s Take a Moment to Think About This
While studying about roots and fruit, one thought kept quietly growing in my spirit:
Faith is the root.
Faithfulness is the fruit.
At first, the difference seemed small, but the more I sat with it, the more I realized how deeply connected the two really are.
Faith begins inside us. It is what we believe. It is trusting God even when we cannot yet see the outcome. Faith often grows quietly beneath the surface like roots stretching underground where nobody notices them.
Faithfulness, however, eventually becomes visible.
Faithfulness shows up in how we continue.
How we remain.
How we respond.
How we keep walking with God over time.
Anyone can say they believe something for a moment. Faithfulness is what happens when belief continues beyond the emotional moment and becomes a way of living.
It reminded me of trees and fruit again.
Roots are hidden beneath the ground, but fruit eventually appears on the branches where everyone can see it. In the same way, faith begins in the hidden places of the heart, but faithfulness becomes visible through our actions, choices, endurance, obedience, and consistency over time.
That realization made me pause and reflect on how much of spiritual growth happens quietly before it ever becomes visible publicly.
Sometimes we want fruit before roots are established.
We want immediate growth.
Immediate answers.
Immediate transformation.
Yet God often spends time strengthening what is beneath the surface first because healthy fruit requires healthy roots.
A storm can test both.
Shallow roots may look fine during calm weather, but pressure eventually reveals what was truly established underneath. Deep roots, however, hold steady because they were developed over time.
Faithfulness often grows this way, too.
Not all at once.
Not instantly.
But through continuing to trust God in ordinary moments.
Continuing to pray.
Continuing to read His Word.
Continuing to obey.
Continuing to remain gentle when frustrated.
Continuing to walk with Him through confusion, waiting, pressure, and refinement.
Little by little, faith begins producing fruit.
That is why Jesus said a tree is known by its fruit. Fruit reveals the condition of the root system beneath it. What is hidden eventually becomes visible.
The beautiful thing is that God does not ask us to manufacture fruit by human effort alone. He calls us to remain rooted in Christ. As we stay connected to Him, His life begins flowing through ours.
Faith anchors us to the Root.
Faithfulness reveals that connection over time.
Sometimes we feel discouraged because we do not yet see much fruit in our lives. Yet perhaps God is still strengthening the roots. Perhaps He is establishing something deeper, steadier, and more enduring than we realize.
Roots take time.
Fruit takes time, too.
But healthy roots eventually produce visible fruit.
Consider This
- In what areas of your life is God strengthening your roots right now?
- How has faithfulness been growing through ordinary daily moments?
- Are there places where God is teaching you to remain rooted instead of giving up too quickly?
Before You Go, Hold Onto This Thought
Faith may begin quietly within the heart, but over time, faithfulness becomes visible through the way we live, endure, love, and continue walking with God.
Do not become discouraged during seasons where growth feels hidden. Roots are still growing beneath the surface. Stay connected to Christ. Stay planted in His Word. In time, the fruit will appear.
Faith is the root.
Faithfulness is the fruit.
