Let’s Start With the Word
“For as the earth brings forth its bud, as the garden causes the things that are sown in it to spring forth…” — Isaiah 61:11
“Rooted and built up in Him and established in the faith…” — Colossians 2:7
“Blessed is the man who trusts in the Lord… For he shall be like a tree planted by the waters, which spreads out its roots by the river.” — Jeremiah 17:7–8
Let’s Take a Moment to Think About This
So much of life happens beneath the surface.
Roots stretch where nobody applauds them.
Seeds break open in hidden darkness before anyone celebrates the bloom.
Even deep healing within the heart often begins quietly before visible change appears outwardly.
While reflecting on roots, trees, and fruit throughout this study, I kept thinking about how easily we become discouraged when we cannot immediately see growth. We tend to measure progress by visible results. We look for fruit on the branches while forgetting that healthy growth usually begins underground first.
God, however, often works beneath the surface long before we recognize what He is building.
That thought felt especially comforting because there are seasons where life can appear still on the outside while something significant is quietly developing within us.
Faith grows beneath the surface.
Wisdom grows beneath the surface.
Endurance grows beneath the surface.
Healing grows beneath the surface.
Even trust in God often deepens in places nobody else can see.
I thought about how roots push downward before branches stretch upward. There is something humbling about that process. Before elevation comes grounding. Before visible fruit comes hidden development.
It reminded me of seasons where I prayed for immediate answers while God seemed more concerned with establishing deeper roots within me. At the time, it felt slow. Sometimes frustrating. Sometimes even disappointing because I wanted visible evidence that something was changing.
Yet looking back, I can now see that some of the deepest spiritual growth in my life happened during seasons where outwardly it appeared that nothing was happening at all.
God was strengthening what could not yet be seen.
There is also tenderness in realizing that hidden seasons are not wasted seasons. A buried seed may appear forgotten to the world, but heaven understands that hidden does not mean dead. Growth can still be taking place beneath the surface.
Jeremiah describes a tree planted by waters, spreading out its roots by the river. The roots keep reaching toward the source even before drought ever comes. That means preparation often happens before testing arrives.
Perhaps that is part of what God does in hidden seasons too. He strengthens us quietly before life’s storms reveal whether our roots were shallow or deep.
Sometimes we ask God for fruit while He is still developing roots strong enough to sustain it.
That changes the way I see waiting seasons now.
Maybe the silence is not emptiness.
Maybe the delay is not abandonment.
Maybe beneath the surface, God is still growing something beautiful.
And perhaps one day, what was quietly developed underground will finally become visible above it.
Consider This
- Have there been seasons in your life where growth was happening beneath the surface without you realizing it?
- Are there areas where God may currently be strengthening your roots before producing visible fruit?
- How might your perspective change if hidden seasons were viewed as preparation instead of absence?
Before You Go, Hold Onto This Thought
Not all growth can be seen immediately.
Some of God’s most important work happens quietly beneath the surface where roots are strengthened, faith is deepened, and hearts are prepared for future fruitfulness.
Do not become discouraged during hidden seasons. Stay planted near the Source. In time, what God has been nurturing in secret will begin to appear openly.
Even beneath the surface, growth is still happening.
