Interactive Study Companion (Part Two)
Introduction
In Part One, we explored the holy anointing oil, the sacred incense, the spices, the measurements, and the craftsmanship involved in their preparation.
In this study, we move beyond the physical ingredients and begin exploring the deeper symbolism. What can fragrance teach us about discernment? Why does Scripture repeatedly use the language of recognition, hearing, smelling, and knowing?
As we search the scriptures together, we will discover how God introduces, reveals, and establishes truth, and how our spiritual senses can be trained to recognize what is authentic.

Bringing It Into Everyday Life
A perfumer trains the nose through repeated exposure, observation, and practice. Over time, the perfumer learns to distinguish what belongs, what clashes, what harmonizes, and what is counterfeit.
Think about an area of your life where discernment is needed.
It may involve:
- Relationships
- Teaching
- Ministry
- Business
- Decision-making
- Personal growth
Consider:
- What area of your life currently requires greater discernment?
- How can you become more intentional about training your spiritual senses?
- What practical step can you take this week to strengthen your discernment?
Baby Steps Reflection
Take a few moments to reflect on today’s study.
- What stood out to you most about the connection between fragrance and discernment?
- What does this study teach you about recognizing truth?
- What does it teach you about identifying counterfeits?
- Which layer impacted you the most and why?
Continue the Journey
Fragrance unfolds in layers. Music unfolds in notes. Discernment develops through training.
In the same way, spiritual maturity is not formed in a single moment but through repeated exposure to God’s Word, His presence, and His truth.
As you continue studying, ask yourself:
Am I learning to recognize what merely appears genuine, or am I learning to discern what is truly authentic?
The trained senses of Hebrews 5:14 remind us that discernment is not reserved for a few. It is developed through practice, obedience, truth, and continual growth in Christ.
