Let’s Start With the Word
Genesis 17:6 (NKJV)
“I will make you exceedingly fruitful; and I will make nations of you, and kings shall come from you.”
Leviticus 26:9 (NKJV)
“For I will look on you favorably and make you fruitful, multiply you and confirm My covenant with you.”
Genesis 24:1 (NKJV)
“Now Abraham was old, well advanced in age; and the LORD had blessed Abraham in all things.”
Let’s Take a Moment to Think About This
Sometimes we look for fruit while God is still growing roots.
We want to see the harvest. We want to see the evidence. We want to point to something visible and say, “There it is. That is the promise.”
Yet when God spoke to Abraham, much of what He promised could not be seen.
No nation stood before him.
No kings had come from him.
The descendants were not yet as numerous as the stars.
Still, God spoke as though it already existed.
“I will make you exceedingly fruitful.”
What strikes me is that God did not wait for the fruit to appear before calling Abraham fruitful. He declared the promise long before Abraham could see the fulfillment.
I was thinking about that while studying these verses. The more I followed the thread, the more I noticed that Scripture kept pointing me back to the same realization. Fruitfulness is often larger than we imagine.
Many of us hear the word and immediately think of numbers, growth, or increase. Yet when Eliezer later described Abraham’s life, he spoke of how the Lord had blessed his master greatly. He spoke of flocks and herds, silver and gold, servants, camels and donkeys. The blessing touched every area of Abraham’s life.
The fruit was visible, but it did not begin there.
It began with a promise.
It began with God speaking.
It began with God establishing something before Abraham could fully understand what it would become.
That thought has stayed with me.
How many times has God been working beneath the surface while we were looking for visible results? How often has He been strengthening roots while we were searching for fruit?
A healthy tree does not become fruitful overnight. Long before fruit appears on the branches, something is happening beneath the soil. Roots are reaching deeper. Strength is developing where no one can see it.
Perhaps some of God’s greatest work in our lives happens in those hidden places.
The places where promises are still growing.
The places where faith is still taking root.
The places where God has already spoken, but the fulfillment has not yet appeared.
If that is where you find yourself today, take heart.
The absence of visible fruit does not mean God has forgotten His promise.
Sometimes it simply means the roots are still growing.
Consider This
- Is there an area of your life where you are looking for fruit while God may be strengthening roots?
- What promise from God are you still waiting to see fulfilled?
- How might your perspective change if you viewed the waiting season as part of the growing season?
Before You Go, Hold Onto This Thought
God does not need visible evidence before He speaks a promise.
He called Abraham fruitful before Abraham could see the fruit.
He established a covenant before generations had been born.
He declared what would be long before it appeared.
If you find yourself in a season where the fruit is not yet visible, do not lose heart. The same God who spoke the promise is still at work beneath the surface.
Roots often grow quietly, but they are preparing for something greater.
May you find peace in knowing that God’s faithfulness is not measured by what you can see today.
The story is still unfolding.
We invite you to return again as we continue searching the Scriptures together, following the threads of God’s Word, and discovering the encouragement hidden within His promises.
